“Negative” emotions and reflexivity: “Feminist winks” about gender and sexualities in ethnographic research on “respected childbirth” in Buenos Aires

Abstract

Through the anthropological tradition of reflexivity, this communication addresses the circularity of emotions in an ethnographic investigation. Undertaken between 2012 and 2015, the empirical reference involves the proposals of groups that promote “respected childbirth” in Buenos Aires. The incorporation of “negative” emotions as legible material approximates suggestions about certain gender mandates based on the language of instincts and maternal destiny. However, a new involvement with the field allowed us to identify the language of rights and that of desires, in subjective terms, proposed by the members, enabling peculiar configurations in the arena of politicization of childbirth.
