The Face of Female Devils: Witchcraft and Subversion in the Cosmopolitics of Pomba-Giras

Abstract

This article presents decolonizing manifestations of Pomba-giras, analyzing their actions in the giras of Quimbanda . Based on ethnography and dialogue with a decolonial feminist perspective it discusses the Pomba-gira as a power used to confront the colonial/patriarchal/modern system, which sees their facial qualities in a degrading manner. The (r)existences created by the Pomba-gira subvert the dualistic ontological foundations of modernity/coloniality, imposed on peoples and women for more than five centuries.
