CASTILHO’S CONTRIBUTIONS TO LETTERS AND THE ARTS IN SÃO MIGUEL (1847-1850)

Abstract

The present article discusses António Feliciano de Castilho’s career path and contributions to letters and the arts on the island of São Miguel in the Azores, from 1847 to 1850. This is a historical-documentary and bibliographic study, based on data collected from different sources such as newspapers, correspondence, articles and books. We emphasize that the presence of this intellectual in the Azores was important for the cultural, artistic and educational development of the island with the promotion of diverse activities such as the creation of the Sociedade das Letras e Artes [Society of Letters and the Arts], holding exhibitions of the industry of São Miguel, his work as a typographer and editor of periodicals and, in particular, the opening of schools to serve the less privileged communities based on the Método Português de Leitura [Portuguese Reading Method].
