Employment in the oil sector: economic dynamics and work in the North of the state of Rio de Janeiro

Abstract

This article records and analyzes the impacts caused by the oil industry in the North of the state of Rio de Janeiro, its structuring role in the labor market, and its influence on the behavior of the regional economy. The methodology applied to carry out the survey of regional jobs was based on quantitative research, which employed the analysis of secondary data related to formal work. Data from the General Roll of Employed and Unemployed Individuals (Caged), among others, were primarily used. It was concluded that medium – and long-term perspectives characterize this region as a declining oil province. However, it is possible to find strategies of productive reconversion based on endogenous projects, since the region has a high population density and has already achieved economic complexity in terms of service infrastructure.
