The utility of Big Data in public statistics and private companies

Abstract

The exponential growth of data storage and exploitation, called Big Data, enabled by digital mediation technologies, faces strong limitations. The problem of data quality is a challenge for private and public organizations. In the former, it is resolved based on the value generated by the economic activity of the companies. In the latter, it is linked to the work of statistical institutes, aimed at preventing sources of disability. This exploratory study compares the impact of Big Data on both environments. The intention is to find differences in distinct dimensions of data management between public and private spheres, taking data quality as a relevant factor.
