Youth temporalities and the impacts of the pandemic context

Abstract:

This article considers the impacts of the pandemic context on how young people experience time. To do so, we started with conversations mediated by social media with four young people of different ages, educational backgrounds, and life contexts, all residing in Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The analysis of these conversations was supported by authors who have been dedicated to understanding different dimensions of youth temporalities, such as Carmen Leccardi and José Machado Pais. It was possible to observe changes in the perceptions of temporality, both in the organization of daily time and in projections about the future. For some young people, time seemed to have accelerated while for others, time appeared to be more sluggish and tedious. In addition, changes in school trajectories were identified by some young people as generators of changes in their expectations for the future.
