A step further? What an intersectional approach can offer urban studies

Abstract:

This article discusses the multiple uses of the concept of intersectionality in studies focused on urban inequalities and struggles. By reviewing the literature, I intend to understand to what extent the concept of intersectionality is a useful reference point for problematizing urban inequalities, going beyond its description or diagnosis. I conclude that when applied to the analysis of cities, intersectionality faces dilemmas similar to the application of intersectional analysis in other areas of study. First, as a critical praxis, faces the risk of overvaluation of social identities. Second, as an analytical category, it is challenging to provide elements that can guide public policies. As this field is underexplored, this article raises questions that may guide future research.
