Mathematical Knowledge Transfers: an experience between Brazilians and Germans from 1971-2002

Abstract:

This paper examines and discusses international cooperation involving Brazil and Germany, which favored the transfer of knowledge in the area of mathematics from 1971 to 2002. As the theoretical framework, we chose cultural transfers and used the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) and the National Research Council (CNPq) archives as a documentary corpus referring to the agreement established between the two countries, as well as statements by participants in the agreement. The conclusion was that there was a great commitment from German institutions in the development of research projects carried out in cooperation with Brazilians, as a result of transfers of mathematical knowledge among those involved. We also found that both Brazilian and German mathematics fed on cultural transfers, as it has been shown by the case study investigated through the agreement CNPq and the Society for Mathematics and Data Processing (GMD).
