The field of study of sociocultural perspectives on Educational Mathematics: collaboration, intellectual structure, and thematic areas

Abstract:

Ethnomathematics studies the relationship between mathematics and culture, taking advantage of contextual elements to identify mathematical processes implicit in cultural practices. The aim of this study was to analyze the state of scientific production published in Scopus (2000-2021) on ethnomathematics and cultural aspects of mathematics. Through an empirical, retrospective study based on bibliometric techniques, 831 articles were analyzed to identify indicators of academic collaboration, intellectual structure according to co-authorship networks and bibliographic coupling of authors and sources, as well as the exploration of the main thematic subjects through co-occurrence networks. An increase in cooperative links between researchers was identified, with a growing importance of Indonesian and Brazilian authors. The thematic field is wide-ranging, including teaching practices, ethnography in educational mathematics, transculturality and ethnomathematical applications in diverse areas. This approach shows mathematical knowledge as a cultural product, of universal domain and not exclusively circumscribed to academic groups.
