Schizolobium parahyba var. amazonicum (Huber ex Ducke) Barneby can be used in enrichment planting in gaps caused by logging in Amazonia

Abstract

Survival and growth rate of seedlings of Schizolobium parahyba var. amazonicum (Huber ex Ducke) Barneby (paricá) randomly planted in gaps were evaluated in three gap sizes after logging in the municipality of Paragominas, Pará state. Measurements were performed in five occasions (2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2011). Canopy gaps were classified as small gaps (200-400 m²), medium gaps (401-600 m²) and large gaps (> 600 m²). According to survival and growth rate of seedlings, in the six-year period after planting, we suggest Schizolobium parahyba var. amazonicum for enrichment planting in gaps larger than 200 m2, caused by reduced impact logging.
