Ultra-fast microwave sintering of CoFe2O4 submicrometric powders

This paper discusses the results of the study on the effect of sintering ultra-fast microwave versus conventional sintering on the micro-structural and physical properties of cobalt ferrite synthesized by the conventional solid state reaction, subjected to high-energy milling. The microstructures of the sintered samples both by microwave and conventional were analyzed by XRD, SEM, density and porosity by Archimedes method, the magnetic properties were examined using a PPMS. The microwave sintering allowed retaining the grain growth of the samples, yielding microstructures with average grain size of 500 nm after sintering at 1150 ° C, like morphologies very homogeneous in comparison with the conventional sintering where average grain size was 2.6 µm at the same temperature. The sintering time in the microwave was only 50 min, only 5% of time spent in a conventional oven.
