Description of Permeability in Porous Ceramics

Porous ceramics represent an important class of materials with many applications in areas such as separation membranes, materials for doping, matrices for impregnation and making composites, materials with special functions (thermal, chemical, mechanical, etc.). A parameter commonly used to describe the behavior of a porous material is its permeability. Equations usually found to describe permeability use only metric parameters such as volume fraction of pores (V V) and average diameter of pores (D). In this work it is carried out an analysis of permeability of porous ceramics obtained via sol-gel method and it is presented an expression for describing a geometrical factor of permeability, which takes into account the concept of connectivity or genus (G) of the pore structure.
