LÍCIA DO PRADO VALLADARES’S TRAJECTORY AND THE CONSTITUTION OF THE URBAN STUDIES FIELD IN BRAZIL

This work analyzes the trajectory of the sociologist Lícia Valladares and her contribution to the field of urban studies, where she played a leading role. She researched the themes of favelas, housing, urban poverty, social movements. and poor childhood. In the 2000s, she began to study the Chicago School of Sociology, contributing to forming a social-urban thinking in Brazil, in dialogue with French and North American sociologies. Note her role in registering and disseminating works on the urban by the creation of the UrbanData database, which made vast bibliographic balances on the themes of her research possible, meeting her epistemological stance, which advocated in-depth knowledge of the state of the art of each subject of investigation. Lícia Valladares’ trajectory reveals different facets of urban studies in Brazil, including themes of a micro and macro nature, relevant to the constitution of a research agenda. The sociologist played an outstanding role in creating transnational research networks, and in training new researchers.
