In Brazil, the current political and cultural crisis allows for a wide discussion regarding the function of intellectuals in society. Considering the worldwide socio-economic changes, this text presents some analyses of the new role assumed by intellectuals in post-modernity. It highlights the intellectual figure drawn by Marx when creating his philosophy of praxis, and goes over the function of the "organic intellectual" as delineated by Gramsci. It stresses the original features emerging from Gramsci's reflections, presents a reinterpretation of some of his categorizations and points out ways of adapting them to our current situation.
