Ostomy patients health care services: diagnostic analysis in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil

This study aimed to describe the characteristics of the structure and processes dimensions of ostomized patients' Health Care Services (SASPO) in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. It's a cross-sectional and descriptive survey carried out in 28 SASPO of Minas Gerais in 2011. Criteria related to structure and processes were analyzed in these 28 health care units distributed in 13 health macro-regions. The data were obtained from structured questionnaires based on governmental regulations for reference service to ambulatory of the ostomized patients. Frequency distribution was used for the descriptive analysis. The results showed that 72% of the units have a structure able to register the patients and dispense devices, and that 40% of them correspond to the service classified as type II. Regard to the processes, 96% of the units relied on nurses, but 52% of them had no qualification. It was also observed that these professionals are more involved in actions related to the program implementation than in health care. It was concluded that the SASPO of Minas Gerais have structure and processes related to registration, control and dispensing of collector bags and devices.
