SUMMARY

The writers compared the fiber value of several edible banana varieties with that of the Manila hemp. The banana plant stalks were harvested a-'ter ripening of the fruits and were decorticated in a sisal scraping machine.

The amount of fibers varied from 0.55 to 1.56 per cent for the clean banana stalks and was 2.93 per cent in case of comparable abaca stalks. The average strength for the Manila hemp fiber was 9.7 kg per bundle made up of 100 mg of .58.1 cm long fibers; for the banana fibers it varied from 5.6 to 9.0 kg.

The results from chemical analyses indicated that the Manila hemp fiber was better than the banana fiber. The cellulose content, that is the most important characteristic in a raw material intended for the cellulose industry, was found to be 71.71 per cent in the Manila hemp and varied from 55.88 to 66.34 per cent in case of the banana fibers.
