The complex of Sitophilus spp (Coleoptera Curculionidae) in the State of São Paulo

The rice weevil, commonly referred to as Sitophilus oryzae (Linneu) was separated in 1959 into two distinct species: S. zeamais and S. oryzae. It was investigated which of them occurred with higher frequency in the State of São Paulo, based on samples of cereals infested by weevils received from 182 counties. In the corn samples examined, 169 counties had only S. zeamais, 11 S. zeamais and S. oryzae and 1 only S. oryzae. In wheat, from 6 samples received, 3 had S. zeamais, 2 S. zeamaisand S. oryzae and 1 S. oryzae. S. granarius was not found at all. The geographical distribution was uniform for S. zeamaiswhilst S. oryzae occurred with higher frequency in the northeastern rice growing region and in the wheat growing region of the South of the State of São Paulo, which on account of their higher altitude are generally more humid and colder. The race of S. oryzae that occurs in São Paulo State behaved like the Nepalese which also occurs in high and colder regions on the contrary of what happens in Japan.
