SUMMARY

There isolates belonging to the genus Colletotrichum were isolated from bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) with symptoms of anthracnose, collected in 1967 and 1968 at Itararé and Botucatu in the State of São Paulo.

Seedlings of Dark Red Kidney, Michelite, and Perry Marrow beans inoculated with these three isolates showed anthracnose symptoms.

The cultural and morphological characteristics of these isolates were the same, but differed from those of Colletotrichum lindemuthianum which is the agent of bean anthracnose in the State of São Paulo.

The new agent produces hyaline, curved, typically canoe-shaped, unicellular conidia, measuring 27 x 3,5 µ, and with dark spines or setae among the conidio-phores. The sporulation in BDA culture medium was abundant. Based on von Arx's key, this fungus was identified as Colletotrichum dematium f. truncata (Schw.) v. Arx.
