Preliminary observations on Agave Zapupe

SUMMARY
In order to estimate the potentialities of Agave Zapupe Trelease as a fiber crop, the author determined the yields and fiber characteristics of two plants growing at the Est. Exp. Central, Instituto Agronômico, Campinas.
The leaves of Agave Zapupe have thorns along their margins; the leaf yield given by the two plants over a period of 5 years was about the same produced by plants of A. sisalana Perrine during a shorter life cycle. The fiber of A. Zapupe had a resistance to traction and elasticity lower than that of A. sisalana; the resistance to torsion was the same, but its fineness was higher.
Unless Agave Zapupe may present some other valuable characteristics, such as resistance to drought and, therefore, better adaptability to the semiarid conditions of the northeastern part of Brazil, or that the market shows a great demand for a finer type of fiber, there is no prospect that the cultivation of A. Zapupe may present advantage over of that A. sisalana.
