Sugar cane variety trials 1951-1954

A series of four sugar cane variety trials was carried out from 1951 to 1954 at the following places in the state of São Paulo: 1) Usina Junqueira, Igarapava, in the "terra-roxa" type of soil; 2) Usina Pôrto Feliz, Pôrto Feliz, and 3) Fazenda Pau-a-pique, Capivari, both in "terra-roxa-misturada" soil; and 4) Usina Itaiquara, Tapiratiba, in the "massapê-salmourão" soil. Four by four lattice squares with 5 replications were used in all laocations. The varieties tested were as follows: Co. 290, Co. 331, Co. 413, Co. 419, Co. 421, CP. 27/139, CP. 29/137, CP. 29/291, CP. 34/120, Tuc. 2645, P.O.J. 2961, I.A.C 34/373, I.A.C 34/536, I.A.C. 34/553, C.B. 38/1, and CB. 36/14. Three harvests (plant cane and two stubble) were made in each of the four tests. Statistical analysis was made of cane and sugar yields of the first harvest alone, and of the three harvests together. The results permitted the following conclusions: a) The varieties Co. 290, Co. 419, and CB. 36/14 gave good yields and were satisfactory under the conditions of the four experiments. They can be recommended rather widely for the state of São Paulo. b) The varieties Co. 421 and Co. 413, especially the latter, did not do so well in the "massapê-salmourão" soil, but they yielded as much as Co. 290 in soils of higher fertility. c) The varieties CP. 27/139, three selections of I.A.C, and CP. 29/137 gave only fair results; CP. 27/139 was the best in this group. d) The varieties CB. 38/1, P.O.J. 2961, and Tuc. 2645 were poor yielders and their use, therefore, is not recommended for the state.
