Seeds of "guarana" (Paullinia cupana (Mart.) Ducke) collected from plants growing at the Experimental Station of Pariquera-Açu, State of São Paulo, Brazil, were analysed for their caffeine contents. The results showed average values for the caffeine contents (dry matter basis) of 1.09 ± 0.29% in the tegument and 2.33 ± 0.38% in the cotyledon and embryo and 2.15 ± 0.34% in the whole seed.
