SUMMARY

Groups of 40 cuttings, being 20 wood-cuttings (bottom) and 20 softcuttings (top), taken from vegetative branches of variety Balamcotta black pepper plants, were treated during 15 hours with 2 different types of plant hormones (alfa-naphtalene acetc acid at 50 mg/1. distilled water, and betaindolyl acetic acid at 50 mg/1. distilled water); two similar groups of untreated cuttings were used as controls, one for hormone solutions (liquid control), and the other for water (dry control). Rooting was carried out in glass phials covered with opaque glass and under lath-work.

Of the two hormones tested, the alfa-naphtalene acetic acid at 50 mg/1 distilled water gave highest percentage (62.5%) of rooted cuttings; nevertheless, statistically, there was no difference among the treatments. There is yet to call the attention to the fact that, of the rooted cuttings, in all treatments about 70-80% were wood-cuttings.
