Specific surface area of soils of the state of São Paulo: I - Study of profiles with textural B horizon and with latossolic B horizon

The ethylene glycol monoethyl ether method was used for determining the soil surface area of 43 soil samples. The samples represent 5 profiles of soils with a textural B horizon and 4 ones with latossolic B horizon. The soils with a textural B horizon presented in the A horizon a specific surface area of 21.60 m²/g and in the B horizon a value of 47.40 m²/g. This difference in specific surface area is related to the texture of the horizons. The A and B horizons of the soils with latossolic B horizon present a specific surface area of 73.50 and 70.20 m²/g, respectively. The clay content of the A horizon is 39.9 percent and in the B horizon 42.8 percent. The highest results of specific surface area in the profile (T. 2875 to T. 2879) are related with the kind of clay minerals present in the clay and silt fractions of the soil.
