Mathematical Creativity in the Solutions of Students Participating in a Problem-Solving Competition

Abstract

Assuming creativity as a potential that can be developed in all individuals, the aim of this study is to describe, characterize, and understand mathematical creativity expressed in the solutions produced by elementary school students (10-12 years-old) in a problem-solving competition of an inclusive character and which runs through the Internet. The research method follows an interpretative approach, using content analysis in a set of 10 solutions to a given problem. The analysis draws on the application of a mathematical creativity framework based on the parameters of originality, fluency, and flexibility, which were adapted to mathematical problem-solving. The results reveal different features of mathematical creativity in the participants’ productions in the competition, with originality standing out albeit reinforced by the ability to represent and retrieve mathematical knowledge. While the presence of the three dimensions is variable, their combined effect determines the unique character of mathematically-creative solutions.
