Scenes of violence between Italian immigrants and Brazilians in the interior of Espírito Santo, Brazil

Abstract

This article aims at discussing conflicts between a group of Italian immigrants and Brazilian workers in the Barracão de Petrópolis district, in the former municipality of Santa Teresa, Espírito Santo, in the late nineteenth century. These conflicts resulted in a sequence of crimes. The analysis is based on police investigation sand news published in newspapers of the time. According to witnesses interviewed by the police, eleven people were killed and public buildings and homes were set on fire in the night between the 2nd and the 3rd of November, 1897. The crimes would have occurred as a Brazilian reaction to the murder by an Italian of a well-known figure. The case was dismissed without charges.
