Abstract
This article presents data collected during an ethnographic incursion carried out in the city of Pelotas, in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, in late 2019. It is an initial approach to the world of African descendants in this city and intended to provide continuity to work conducted in Caruao Parish, Venezuela. The overall objective of the fieldwork in Pelotas was to investigate whether African Brazilians born in this city recognize themselves as descendants of former slaves, by applying a semi-structured interview script (as done in Caruao). Finally, we reflect on some of the coincidences between the results of both investigations, namely a tendency among the subjects to forget the slavery in their past.
