The Meridional Jê chronology and new data for the upper reaches of Arroio Cará, Coxilha Rica, Lages, Santa Catarina

Abstract

This work presents the archaeological findings from two sets of pit houses related to southern Jê groups located in the upper reaches of Arroio Cará, in the cultural territory of Coxilha Rica, located in the Campos Gerais Plateau in Santa Catarina, southern Brazil. Reviewing the chronological data available for southern Jê sites made it possible to identify the highest concentration of dates between 800 and 1,600 AD. Three new 14C dates were obtained for these sites: 680+/-30 years 14C BP for the SC.PQ.17 site, and 1,440 +/- 30 years 14C BP and 350 +/- 30 years 14C BP for the SC.PQ.18 site. The most recent occupation of the SC.PQ.18 site may be related to the group mapped by Curt Nimuendaju near the Canoas and Pelotas Rivers as 'Pinaré.'
