Control of teaching: foucauldian provocations about university administration

Abstract

This paper deals with the apparatus of control, surveillance and dressage that can be identified in the academic environment, institutionalized by the educational industries managers. The theoretical background takes place in the work of Michel Foucault, especially his definition of power, presented in the book Surveillier et punir (Foucault, 1975). We also assume the propositions of Moeglin (2010), who wrote Les industries éducatives, where he presents important questions related to the management of educational institutions. Teachers working conditions are the main topic we discuss, especially when they are submitted to control. In particular, our framework takes place on the three apparatus mentioned previously, through some reflections about the role of information technology implemented in the schools in order to control actions and behaviors. Given the assumptions that we have constructed, it is possible to infer that educational institutions, nowadays, are getting more and more surrounded by a panoptic panorama.
