There is a discussion in Argentina about the changes in the higher education law in effect since 1995. Among the aspects that this law cannot resolve is the tension between university autonomy and state evaluation. This study analyses this issue in reference to the context in which it was produced - the 90s - and analyses the law that has been in effect until today. Given this ongoing debate concerning the aspects that should be considered by a new law, the present study concludes with a proposal about the tension between autonomy and evaluation.
