Evaluation and quality of teacher professional development: which relationship?

It seems not to raise controversy the statement that, for many contingencies, the evaluation has recently acquired a significant centrality in terms of discourses and practices. Across all society sectors, the evaluation has already become a commonplace, with prevalence of the idea that the lack of evaluation will condemn all institutions to failure. An example of the just mentioned is the case of education, in which the evaluation has expanded in a way that encompasses, nowadays, all dimensions structuring the "educational building". More recently, the concepts of development, quality and quality development have also been included in purposes and practices of change and improvement of teaching and learning, which demands an analysis of evaluation procedures that contribute to it. In education, it is precisely at the level of learning and teacher professional development that the evaluation can make the difference, especially if contributes to improving the scientific and pedagogical training of teachers, helps to consolidate commitments and contributes to renew mentalities. It is precisely about these topics that reflect the text that appears below. We start by characterizing different forms of teacher professional development, alluding to the purposes, processes of learning, teacher points of view and types of professionalism underlying them. Next, it will be mentioned the teacher performance evaluation, interpellating different logics around what this might consist and the professional development and performance evaluation will be related, identifying some critical points on that relation. At the end, as a conclusion, it will be referred some aspects that, in our opinion, can make this symbiosis more fruitful and make the evaluation a mechanism for professional improvement.
