Notes on the recent transformations of the Brasilian public university

Abstract

This paper discusses some of the main transformations the Brazilian public university has gone through over the course of the last decades, especially after the 1990s. We approach a set of three different processes that are connected by the neoliberal rationale: the emergence of academic capitalism, the genesis of innovationism and the acceleration of research productivism. These three processes may jeopardize the observance of the university’s civilizatory role, as pointed out by several authors. However, encased by the neoliberal fable, they are naturalized and are disseminated without having been thoroughly debated on the academic environment. This article presents a brief discussion of these movements, situating them politically and raising some questions regarding the acritical way in which they have circulated throughout the Brazilian public university.
