Scientific evidences for managing pain in the neonatal population

Objective: Tocritically analyze the systematic reviews on neonatal pain management published in the Cochrane library database. Methods: The keywords "pain" and "neonate" were used to search the database. Results: Six systematic reviews were retrieved. The main themes addressed by these systematic reviews were the following: pain related to therapeutic procedures (one review), non-pharmacological approaches for pain management (two reviews), and pharmacological approaches for pain management (three reviews). Conclusion: The systematic reviews suggested the need for other clinical studies with larger sample size and stronger research design. These studies would provide further evidence regarding the best approaches for adequate for managing pain in the neonatal population.
