Group psychotherapy of alcoholics and their wives

The experience with group psychoterapy treatment of 11 alcoholic patients (two groups of 6 and 5 patients treated during 6 and 4 months respectively) is reported. Simultaneously their wives, identicaly grouped, have been treated during 18 and 11 months respectively. Each group had a week session lasting an hour during the first 8 months and every two weeks afterwards. All patients have been know to be alcoholics before marriage. In the alcoholic group the author mantained a paternal disposition, protective and comprehensive, giving all drug support; as far as concern their wives the author's position was mainly analytical. After a two or three years follow-up 8 alcoholics have had regular, good or excellent results (72%). Group psychoterapy treatment has been well taken by alcoholic patients as well as their wives. The treatment of alcoholic's wives was very important, the best results being observed with patients which wives psychological conditions improved. The alcoholic patients can get some improvement, even after leaving the treatment, if their wives change their position towards them.
