Photomontage and Brazilian press (1900-1940): a preliminary approach

ABSTRACT

From a sample survey, this article aims to analyze the use of montage processes in the Brazilian press between 1900 and 1940. To demonstrate the possibilities offered to researches in a yet little studied field, the text is divided into two distinct moments. The first, called “close-up,” is dedicated to investigating two crimes, seeking to understand how montage collaborates in the articulation of reports sometimes sober, sometimes sensationalist. The second, entitled “travelling,” addresses some of the numerous possibilities offered by the montage, confronting the reader with a strange, though not disturbing, visual rhythm.
