LAND RIGHTS AND OWNERSHIPS IN ENTRE RÍOS DURING 19TH CENTURY

Abstract

This paper addresses the traditions and laws of access to property and examines the nature of the political and legal debates on land law reforms in Entre Rios during the nineteenth century. It reconstructs the general background and trajectories of access to land in the province and analyzes the legislative debates of the early 1860s regarding the laws on the sale of public lands and the leasing of private property. Based on the study of both axes, this work maintains that the liberal laws maintained in their conception a certain balance between old and new conceptions of property in order to avoid a full confrontation with old social and economic practices of long existence and scope in the nineteenth-century society.
