This paper focuses on the discussion of the multidimensional dimension of dialectology studies and it aims to: i) discuss aspects of sociolinguistics dimension of the ALiB project (Linguistic Atlas of Brazil), based on the profile established for the selection of informants and ii) present an overview of the characteristics of 200 informants of ALiB who were interviewed in 25 Brazilian capitals, discussing highlighted trends in this universe of speakers of contemporary Portuguese language, especially in terms of education level, contacts with the media - television and radio; newspaper reading habits and entertainment: cinema and theater. In order to do so, it retrieves historiographical data related to the Dialectology subject, highlighting aspects that show, since its inception, the necessity to consider, in addition to horizontality, the vertical dimension aspects of linguistic studies, also taking social variables as parameters for the description and analysis of the speech of social groups fixed in geographical areas that were previously delimited.
