Shapes of Memory (Contemporary Colombian Narrative)

Abstract

This article examines five Colombian narrative works published between 2004 and 2007, and it finds the topic of memory as a strong thematic focus and an aesthetic challenge. How does literary fiction deal with the reconstruction of a collective past? How is it possible to connect private and public life while remaking one’s biography or someone else’s? How can we update the literary inquiries about memory and the reconstruction of (auto) biography in Colombian contemporary narrative? These questions guide the discussion on narrative works which are completely different regarding the type of narrator, historical context and fictional pact that they posit.
