Benvenuto Terracini, languages and style. The literary text from the perspective of exile

Abstract

The article focuses on the work of Italian philologist Benvenuto Terracini in Argentina, where he lived between 1941 and 1946. We focus specifically on some aspects of Terracini's Argentine production in the field of literary studies, paying particular attention to his series of writings about the Luigi Pirandello’s stories. We highlight the concept of style proposed by Terracini in this series, as well as his opening for a reflection about the text that highlights the intersection of voices and languages. Our proposal suggests that the "turn" towards contemporary literary studies and the increasing interest in Terracini in stylistic studies, which his scholars describe as key aspects consolidated during the Argentine period, are not linked to the “lack of means” associated with the Latin American context. On the contrary, our proposal maintains that these aspects are linked to the enabling conditions afforded by the local environment of philological studies, especially through the action of the Instituto de Filología of the University of Buenos Aires.
