Horizons of post-coloniality: the antillean cycle by Simone and André Schwarz-Bart

Abstract

This article analyzes the importance of slave trade and slavery in the formation of identity in the Americas, particularly in the Caribbean islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe. It examines the connection between the literary work and the history of slavery from the angle of the Antillean cycle, the ongoing novelistic project by Simone and André Schwarz-Bart. The project features Solitude, a character who symbolizes the black resistance in Guadalupe, and her female lineage in order to understand the post-colonial period between 1760 and 1953 in an attempt to fictionally re-create the horizons of post-coloniality, promote new versions of the Antillean chronicle, and fill in the gaps and silences of memory.
