(Post)colonial memories in two acts: dialogues and dystopias between parents and children in Caderno de memórias coloniais by Isabela Figueiredo

Abstract

This article studies the representation of the final years of Portuguese colonization in Lourenço Marques (currently Maputo, capital of Mozambique) in the literary book Caderno de memórias coloniais (2009), by the writer Isabela Figueiredo. It is about analyzing colonial writing from the perspective of two distinct generations: the colonialist father and the progressive daughter. The novel welcomes the promising shuffles of self-writing and paratexts, shedding light on the interfaces between an individual writing and the Portuguese collective memory of a national trauma. In his romanesque tessitura, Figueiredo seeks to escape the dangers of the unique story (ADICHIE) and writes, as Walter Benjamin teaches, a story to be opposed.
