EFFICACY OF ATTRACTANTS FOR MONITORING CERATITIS CAPITATA (DIPTERA: TEPHRITIDAE) IN A CITRUS ORCHARD

ABSTRACT

From July to November 2005 the efficacy of food attractants using McPhail traps for trapping medfly Ceratitis capitata (Wied.) (Dip.: Tephritidae) were evaluated in a citrus orchard in Presidente Prudente county, state of São Paulo, Brazil. The tested attractants diluted in water were: 5% Milhocina®, 7% sugarcane syrup, 5% Aumax®, 3% Bio Anastrepha, 1% Bio Anastrepha 1% plus 2% Milhocina® and, 1% Bio Anastrepha + 2% sugarcane syrup. During the experiment, McPhail traps captured 2,302 medfly adults, of which 81.8% were females. Bio Anastrepha and Bio Anastrepha plus Milhocina® presented a significantly higher number of medfly females and males than the remaining attractants, analyzed by sex together or separately, with similar values for both treatments. These treatments captured 64.1% and 37.4% of all females of the experiment, respectively. The remaining treatments captured similar quantities of medfly females and males, except Aumax® which captured significantly fewer females. Among the weather parameters, only relative humidity presented negative correlation.
