A psychoanalytic study of the relationship between neurotic depression and desire: possible approaches.

ABSTRACT:

This article is intended to contextualize the issue of depression in the contemporary world in order to highlight the massive contingent of depression in the current scenario as formed by neurotics, and later to relate the depressive dejection and libidinal deflation present in these frames with the function of desire. We suggest that depression takes part in a new libidinal economy nowadays. The contemporary depression is characterized increasingly by a withdrawal position of the conflicts inherent in the human condition, increasingly taking refuge in a protected and paralyzed position more characteristic of inhibitions than the symptoms. Narcissism and mourning are central themes.
