The efect of ultrasound therapy on the healing of colonic anastomosis in rats

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the role of the ultrasound therapy in the healing of colonic anastomosis. Sixty-four Wistar male rats were studied. In the first protocol thirty-two animals were submited to a colonic anastomosis using 5-0 nylon suture. In the second protocol the remaining rats had their colonic anastomosis performed with 5-0 steel wire suture. In both protocols 50% of the animals were submited to terapeutic ultrasound. The anastomosis were evaluated on the 3rd and 7th post-operative day through bursting pressure and histological studies. Finally a third protocol was done to compare the healing process of the anastomosis performed with nylon and steel wire sutures in the therapeutic groups. We concluded the ultrasound does not interfere in the colonic healing process of the anastomosis performed with nylon or steel wire sutures.
