Criteria for decision making in sustainable road works

Decision making for road maintenance works should be guided by mechanisms designed to keep the pavements in good functional condition for users, providing the basic structure for the economic and social development of the population. The prioritization of road maintenance works using a multi-criteria procedure is a strategy used to evaluate several points of view. This paper presents the application of the Multi-criteria Analysis Method PROMETHE II to prioritize road maintenance works, using three different scenarios, considering the association of Technical, Economic, Social, Environmental and Traffic criteria. The prioritization was applied to twenty-three different stretches of highway in the state of Paraíba, aiming to assess the various points of view of decision makers: strictly technical, cost/benefit ratio and sustainable construction. The scenario that took into account sustainable construction prioritized road sections where there was a greater need of social development and where environmental impact would be small.
