Analysis of the potential use of basaltic filler as a partial replacement of Portland cement

Abstract

Due to the environmental impacts generated by the construction industry, researchers have turned their attention to the reinsertion of waste within the construction industry itself, among which is basaltic filler (FB). For this, the mineralogical and chemical composition of FB was evaluated, in addition to measuring the pozzolanic potential of the material passing through the 45 μm mesh opening sieve, through NBR 12653 (ABNT, 2015a). Therefore, mortars were prepared with partial replacement of Portland cement by FB in the contents of 0% (REF), 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25%, evaluating the compressive strength at 28, 63, 90 and 180 days. In addition, normal consistency and setting times of pastes containing basaltic material were verified. As for the substitution potential, it is concluded that FB met the chemical requirements evaluated, but presented results below the acceptable limits in regulations when the activity with lime was evaluated at 7 days - it presented a result 89% lower than the reference value - and resistance to compression to 180 days - the replacement content of 25% presented a result 41.8% lower compared to REF. Furthermore, FB proved to be a basic rock, whose morphology does not present amorphous material.
