Effect of polymer additions on pastes of white cement on hardened state

This paper investigates the impact of polymers on properties of white Portland cement pastes in the hardened state. Two different polymers, with different physical-chemical properties were used: EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) as redispersable powder, and SAE (styrene acrylic emulsion). Pastes were prepared using a constant water/cement ratio of 0.40, and varying amounts of latex from 5% to 20% of actives by cement weight. Although the polymers had negative and different impacts on cement hydration reactions, the mechanical strength was increased; water absorption and steam permeability were reduced at a higher latex/cement ratio.
