Prevalence of diabetic retinopathy in a diabetic population of the Clinical Hospital of Franco da Rocha - SP

SUMMARY

The study of 284 eyes of 142 diabetic patients was conducted in Franco da Rocha’s Clinic Hospital showing cIear prevalence of pre-proliferative and proliferative diabetic retinopathy in the insulin dependent patients in relation to the non insulin dependents ones.

The severity of diabetic retinopathy had been directly connected to the duration of the disease, where we could observe 48,49% of pre-proliferative and proliferative diabetic retinopathy in patients with the pathology more than 15 years. Proliferative diabetic retinopathy occurred in 14,79% of diabetic patients.

A Survey about the degree of information received by the patients concerning the possibility of becoming blind due to disease showed a lack of knowledge among one third of the patients inquired.
