SUMMARY
Ocular toxocariasis may appear as posterior or peripheral granuloma of the retina, or as endophthalmitis. Its treatment is initially clinical, however, in cases with severe ocular damage, vitrectomy may be attempted.
In the present work, we report 6 cases of ocular toxocariasis and retinal detachment, which were submmitted to pars plana vitrectomy in an attempt to achieve visual recovery. Patients were divided in two groups: I - younger children (710 yo) and presenting with a severe ocular inflamatory reaction; II - patients a little older (19-22 yo) who presented with a giant retinal tear and retinal detachment due to toxocariasis granuloma. Of the 6 cases, only 2 revealed a significant visual improvement. In others, visual acuity remained the sarne or worse, mainly due to the occurrance of very severe post-operatory intraocular inflammation.
