Corneal and conjunctival sensitivity in Hansen's disease using Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments

SUMMARY

The sensitivity of the cornea and the conjunctiva was studied in 224 eyes from leprous patients and 116 eyes from normal individuals using Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments.

There was no significant statistical among the quadrants of the cornea and the conjunctiva in both groups. The conjunctival sensitivity was diminished when compared to the corneal sensitivity in both groups.

A significant decrease in both corneal and conjunctival sensitivities was demonstrated in the leprosy group.

Further studies are needed to determine the efficacy and role of the test in the current ophthalmic practice.
