Blepharoptosis: study of 390 cases

SUMMARY

Between January 1985 and February 1995, in the Ocular Plastic Section of Federal University of São Paulo - Paulista School of Medicine, were examined 390 patients with low upper eyelid. Were found 68,9% congenital ptosis, 22,8% acquired ptosis and 8,2% pseudoptosis. There were 54,8% males and 45,1% females. Patients with congenital ptosis showed: Amblyopia in 5,9%, Marcus-Gunn Jaw-Winking Syndrome in 5,3% and Blepharophimosis Syndrome in 6,3%. Coexistent strabismus was associated in 20% of congenital ptosis cases and 29% of acquired ptosis cases. The most common eyelid anomalies was epicanthal folds. The authors analyse the ocular and eyelids alterations associated with blepharoptosis.
